Got my TKD black belt when I was 18, made 2nd dan 4 years later. I am testing on 27 August 2012 for my shodan in judo after training for 20 years on and off. Been training steadily for the past 4 years.

My green belt test in Wado should be coming up pretty soon. All the belt tests are pretty much the same, they just add more material as we go. First we plow through basic techniques, moving drills, combos-- usually there's a small amount of bag-work involved just to demonstrate how much power you can develop with a technique. Afterwards we do individual kata demonstration. For green I will have to do all the Pinan kata, which really isn't too bad. Then comes kumite. Sparring and breaking techniques aren't added into belt tests until high brown and black tests, respectively.

Three exams had so far which, coupled with the fact that in Italy the first rank is 6th kyu, makes me a 4th kyu. Three-ish hours of training followed by tecniques from the programme, including more variations as rank increases. From 3rd kyu onward, tecniques must be used in a randori situation.

Being able to keep a cool head after training and with multiple adversaries is valued together with technique.

is that a picture of you?
Considered in the abstract the boxing ring is an altar of sorts, one of those legendary spaces where the laws of a nation are suspended: inside the ropes, during an officially regulated three-minute round, a man may be killed by his opponent's hands but he cannot be legally murdered. Boxing inhabits a sacred space predating civilization; or, to use D.H. Lawrence's phrase, before God was love. If it suggests a savage ceremony or a rite of atonement it also suggests the futility of such gestures. For what possible atonement is the fight waged if it must shortly be waged again... and again? The boxing match is the very image, the more terrifying for being so stylized, of mankind's collective aggression; its ongoing historical madness.
