Kenpo for self-defense and ameture fights

I haven't been in much of anything lately, except the occasional boxing session. There is a guy in my neighborhood offering to teach me kenpo. He is an ex-police officer and seems to know what he's doing. I was wanting to ask for some opinions on kenpo as a self-defense system, and also whether it can be applied to mma.

While depending on how its trained and the general attitude of the practitioner, kenpo can be a great set of tools or a ridiculously stylized set of combinations that have no place anywhere.

But I mean if its in the neighborhood and free, and the guy isn't a dick, it can't hurt to try things out for a few weeks and see if you take to it or not.

Are you referring to Okinawan Kenpo, Hawaiian Kenpo, or Shorinji Kempo?

Because saying kenpo is like saying karate...we have no idea what kind you're talking about and there are vast differences.

Well that right there already taught me something. I talked more with the man and he didn't mention any particular variation of kenpo. As I said, he's an ex-officer. the way I understand it i would be learning various things he has found the most effective in his encounters on the street. He has studied Judo, Kenpo, BJJ, Muay Thai, Western Boxing, and TKD, but the base would be in kenpo. He did mention work with traditional weapons and forms, which I'm not too thrilled about, but I'm going to give it a try and see how well I like it.
