IIRC in IBJJF rulesets the referee can stop the fight when injuries happen, enforcing contestant safety even when they are willing to risk serious injury. I was kinda surprised that there's no such thing in Olympic Judo.
However I completely understand why the Romanian wanted to continue, it was the goddamn Olympics final after all.Curiosity killed the cat. But damn it had a blast.

More seriously, to differentiate Judo from wrestling and because shooting bad leg attacks was functional as a stalling tactic or to get out of unfavourable gripping situations given the lack of penalty for being on your belly. Doing bad forward throw attempts is still fine.
Does any other Olympic sport feel the need to DQ so many of its competitors?
