escrima/arnis schools in philadelphia
so i took the advice from my first post and tried to look around for escrima schools in the philly area does anyone have any experience with any of these?:
thanks for any feedback/suggestions
dude. you have badass choices for schools.
I'd say the PTK and Atienza places look excellent.
I don't see a atienza school / training group listed for philly though. but they are excellent but expensive from what i've heard.
as for the zikdokan... im a bit wary of the chunner connections and the guy who calls himself shihan/sifu in the bottom.. but he's not the guro who's teaching the FMA.
Guro Lledo is.. and if his "history" is true. he is a "traditionalist" and a legitimate background in FMA (modern arnis/illustrimo and kuntaw/silat.. unverified). If traditionalism is up your alley. he appears to be a good choice.... probably worth checking out a class. seeing if they train "alive" and how they train or if its a glorified kata with sticks.
I'd still go with Atienza Kali or the PTK guy first though.
Those two groups from what I've heard are less rhetoric, more fundamental.
If I were there, and budget permitted, I would choose both. But yes. Atienza or Pekiti is where I would look. Generally speaking you'll see more emphasis on body mechanics and footwork in the pekiti class, and you'll get into the strategy of the fight earlier in the Atienza stuff.
thanks a lot. time permitting i will definitely check them out
I am the Atienza Kali Instructor in Philly. PM or email me with any questions.
