Plus, when he finally transitions to a fighting art, he'll already be fast, limber and strong as ****. I wish I had time to do capoeira.

you can find some very good traditional art schools, but they are increasingly rare. Let him take a class though bro. one may surprise you, and even if it doesn't, he will learn discipline of his body, get fit, and generally be a better fighter than the average joe anyway, which will make his transition to a sport fighting art ( like muay thai, boxing, or bjj ) or a reality based self defense ( krav, systema ) or a "street fighting art" ( Jeet kune do ) that much easier.

And you never know when you may find a school like this

Leagues better than most traditional taekwondo schools. More akin to the Korean armies use of the style.

I used to have some faith in these traditional schools due to training at an apparently WAY above par dojang. I can't believe how many of these suck terribly.
    :Suspicious:
The vast majority of classes consisted of forms, while the rest consisted of unrealistically long and complicated "self-defense" techniques, and complicated jumping/spinning versions of basic kicks the students had yet to do well. (ie, tornado kicks when they couldn't effectively do a round kick)

Is it like this everywhere? Wouldn't anyone who, say turned on the TV, see some sort of MMA/Kickboxing fight and see that this won't work?
Sorry about the rant, haven't really set foot in these kind of gyms before and it's a bit of a shock. :(
Here's a crazy idea...maybe your friend should be the one checking out the schools since he is the one who is going to train there?

What kind of weird **** are you into if you drive around town checking out MA schools for your friend?

    that's just strange...

We've all had a "friend" who needs advice, but was afraid to ask, so we ask for them.

Too bad this dojang is in Australia. This is the type of TKD I have been looking for. Too much of the TKD here blows. That and KK dojos are non-existant anywhere near me.

Stop whining. The suckage is a good thing.

Life is a zero-sum game: only so much excellence to go around per capita. The more suckage there is, the better life is, in contrast, for those involved in things that don't suck.
