actually, ball peen hammers are used to shape metal & are more often than not not used to hit very hard. a rubber mallet, on the other hand, is used to smack the living **** out of whatever, & is rubber so as to not mar finer finishes.
You start wailing on something with a ball peen hammer, & it's going to break. It's just a matter of time. The rubber mallet, on the other hand, will probably last you the life of the rubber. I don't ever recall seeing anyone actually wear one out.
there is a movement in boxing to switch back to lighter gloves, because fights would stop more often due to cuts rather than knockouts and the fighters would receive less head trauma from repeated blows to the head from well protected fists in larger gloves. Even in boxing they know that if the hand is better protected and has a larger surface area, it's going to be able to dish out more forceful blows for longer. the palm heel is very much like the larger glove, while bare knuckle punching is closer to the minimal glove.
Keith Hackney was immortalized when he knocked Emmanuel Yarborough (who had a 9" height & 500lb weight advantage) flat on his ass with an open handed strike to the head. He then proceeded to break his hand while punching Yarborough in the head.
THAT NIGHT HACKNEY THREW WHAT WAS ARGUABLY THE MOST EFFECTIVE HAND STRIKE EVER SEEN ON TELEVISION.... & then was forced to drop out of the tournament because he decided to switch to punches & broke his hand. How many times do you think he's looked back on that night & wondered, "If I only hadn't punched him, how might things have turned out....".

***Was this quote "taken out of context"?***
"The judoist has no time to allow himself a margin for error, especially in a situation upon which his or another person's very life depends...."
