That's really difficult. The 40K universe has a shitload of back story and cross referencing. Even if you started with the Horus Heresy (technically Warhammer 30K) that series is 25 books and counting and it hasn't even gotten to the siege of Terra yet.
There's fan wikis like http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page#.T-j_3LWwyBo but that can be pretty dry reading especially if you don't know where to start
I myself got into 40K trying to flesh out a character fo the Dark Heresy RPG and dove straight into the tv tropes pages http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...Warhammer40000 read that first and use the Lexicanum for follow up details.
The quality of the books vary by author. You won't get much argument about the big 4 though : Aaron Dembski-Bowden especially his Night Lords trilogy, Dan Abnett for the Eisenhorn and Ravenor books, Most of Graham McNiel's stuff and Ben Counter.
The Night Lords and Eisenhorn books are my personal favorites but they are so grim and so dark they can be outright depressing. The Ciaphus Cain novels have a sense of humor to them.
On a recommendation from another website I first read "Storm of Iron" by Graham McNeil and at the time it was a one shot book that didn't need much back story and gradually explains what war is like in the 40th millennium. -

I've seen it...and its definitely "meh". I read that it was actually a fan made movie that got GW's okay. Wish they'd make a high speed live action WH40K movie.
On another note....with all the varying descriptions of Astartes and their skin tones. Why do they all seem to be visually depicted as white? -
