    Rabbit, thanks for the breakdown of the definition. That was very informative. In defense of Ted Kaptchuck, the author of the book I refer to, his note is several pages long and discusses the meanings of the parts of the character (in a little less detail than you provide above). I just summarized it briefly to explain that my vaguely remembered idea wasn't completely off base.

    Nice to have access to a scholar right here on the forums, thanks again.

    A more useful definition that i've heard (from a native speaker/acupuncture teacher), bearing in mind that it's all contextual, was "The nourishment we receive from the air we breath."
