During the very brief time I did judo, my instructor always used seoi nage and shoulder throw interchangeably.

I are confused. I was a judoka for ten years, the sankyu test specifically calls seoi nage a "shoulder throw." Is it a semantics thing?

And lo, Kano looked down upon the field and saw the multitudes. Amongst them were the disciples of Uesheba who were greatly vexed at his sayings. And Kano spake: "Do not be concerned with the mote in thy neighbor's eye, when verily thou hast a massive stick in thine ass".

yeah it's mostly a semantics thing, but we're talking about japanese language, and judo principles.

seoi nage means "back carry" and the throw is classified as a back throw, not a shoulder throw, as uke is loaded on tori's back.

an example of a shoulder throw is kata guruma (shoulder wheel, aka fireman's carry) where uke is loaded onto tori's shoulders.

it is extremely common for people to refer to seoi nage as a shoulder throw, even experienced judoka, but that doesn't make it correct.

It is also classified as a te waza for testing purposes. Just for fun.

SEOI NAGE means SLING THROW, BACK CARRY THROW or BACKPACK THROW (depending on how you want to translate 背負い. Ofcourse 投げ mens throw) and you are correct. Only in ippon seoi nage you use the shoulder in morote seoi nage you don't.
So saying Ippon Seoi Nage is a shoulder throw is correct but saying Seoi Nage is a shoulder throw isn't.
