I think this holds true for all functional systems whether armed or unarmed, without controlling range you cannot fight safely.advantage is in timing, distancing, and footwork.
Without understanding timing you cannot make use of functional techniques, gain the initiative or adapt/react correctly to your opponents offense/defense.
In the arts we study people generalyl are started off with basic techniques both armed and unarmed to re-enforce principals of the system and help develop good habits.
If a system is a complete system then the unarmed should teach you about the armed and vice versa. -

I don't have much to add to the perception of speed.
The other thing people say is that it will make your own hands faster. There are a few reasons:
*the weight of the stick keep the hands moving at a certain speed without having to force it
*it stops you from striking in certain ways because it's uncomfortable
*it gives some resistance when you want to go faster, with a few practical advantages over other equipment
*a lot of people find karenza/solo stick work more interesting than shadow boxing so they practise more -

I don't know about "perception" of speed, by my reaction time definitely improved from FMA.
I credit this to being hit in the face by sticks. They move very fast and they sting like a mofo when they conect. It's no fun and most reasonable people would want to avoid being hit in the face with sticks. Thus I adapted rapid reactions to better avoid being hit by sticks. Now I am faster and more precise when countering attacks. Some real basic Pavlovian style rote learning.
Also, economy of movement. That definitely helps with the speed part.
Negative re-inforcement and economy are not unique to FMA though.
