    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Roy Nelson gongfu

I'm surprised there wasn't a thread about this already. A promotional vid for UFC 146, where Nelson knocked out his opponent in the first round:

It ends with Rogan saying "Roy 'Big Country' Nelson is no joke, ladies and gentlemen" but clearly there's some joking going on. He's wearing a performance outfit, for example, which I doubt he wears "every day." His sticky hands ain't bad at all actually, and Nelson clearly feels some nostalgia for his teenage training, but is there anything going on here at all except for a free extended commercial for Nelson's old school? Is this good or bad for CMA?

Good or bad is not important.

The best CMA representation already hit UFC, well before they wore gloves, imho. Let's see if he stacks up...

He also credits his jiujitsu. I like this guy on a personal level....want to invite him over for a beer. He's the Seth Rogan of kung fu...

i actually thought that roy was joking when he claimed his style as "kung fu", so i never bothered to look into his background.

Yes, it actually is important. Otherwise, you wouldn't have alluded to the "best CMA representaton..."

It's one of those "funny because it's true" jokes. He's like Fat Seinfeld.

When I saw it my assumption was that he probably still fools around with this stuff a little bit, the UFC caught wind of it and made him do this piece because they knew they'd have time to fill between the quick fights sure to occur on the all HW card.

I don't see how this would be bad for CMA. He's letting everyone know that he gives a lot of credit to what most martial artists deem useless. He says he still practices his kung fu every day, and with a record of 17-7, he's probably on to something.

So, is this all a hoax or does Roy Nelson actually train like this often?

As a big guy I have to say I effin love Big country. When he was on TUF Everyone looked at him like a joke but he won, the fight with Kimbo yes he wasn't hitting hard but it was to make a point about his ground game and the rules.
