I like to think martial arts have use in real life other than just beating people up and fighting in rings

Me too. Outside of combat sports/military applications, martial arts study allow normal people to protect themselves without resorting to merely kicking the everlovin **** out of a chap.

If someone can hang sparring rounds, then restraining rather than pummeling is possible assuming they're not a tard of chunners (no can def3nce), or Aundre the GiantDrunkGuy. I don't want to hurt anyone, even if I'm not going to let them hurt me.

I would never unleash a full barrage on anyone short of about-to-die. I've inflicted more pain at throwdowns/gym (though very little hehe) than the rest of my adult life by some absurd multiple. Outside of the gym, I don't want to do that.

We were just studying a sport ruleset, but were told often to keep it in the gym. That's solid advice, that I've followed.

People who brag about their martial art and put others down might be insecure though.
I know Watching JCVD and Chuck the Noris really played a big part for me, I have always loved MA and I really think that is what matters ya know.

I think one reason I do train is the sense of community and the great friendships I have made, Your dojo mates see you at your worst and ultimately at your best. Training should always be fun if you don't like what you're doing then find something you like.

I practice because when I finally figure out how to fly, my takeoffs and landings will be important.

I practice, so when I return to my Buttercup,
I can rescue her from Prince Humperdinck.

I am Iningo Montoya, ju keel my father. Prepare to die.

I got into MA when I was younger, much for the same reason as one of the previous posters. I had a cokehead abusive stepfather, so I started with TKD and slowly got into judo. After I left my house to live with my aunt, I continued MAs just for the fun of it. I do it now for stress relief and staying in shape, because I hate going to the gym.
