De Ashi Harai nogi

Recently Josh Thompson used a variation of this move against Gilbert Melendez to great success. I also know that Lyoto Machida does a variation of it as well.

I figured this would fit perfectly into my clinch game as I've been incorporating knee tap variations.

I wanted to see if my more judo inclined brothers would like to input suggests for combos, drills I could use, or general advice for how I could achieve the off-balancing needed.

For starters its a Ko soto gake, not a De ashi barai.

Lyoto Machida's is more akin to an Sukui nage.

The key point in the Melendez case is making yourself the vertical to your opponents horizontal when in a moving situation.

Great advice and this is a fantastic video, should be a referral to show "proper judo" around... magnificent technique explanation, textbook countering, and judogodlike finesse like in the 6:55 sen-no-sen stuff.

On the name- Whatever...

Different method of attacking - ashi barai is a sweeping of the foot as weight is transfered onto or off of the foot.

Gake is an uprooting of the foot when it is planted.

So the difference does matter.

Jolly good. If you watch the gifs you'll see that the successful attempts Thompson gets an excellent, for an MMA situation, control of Melendez's head with his left hand.

2) Knee tap, double leg, lat drop, lat drop foot sweep combo, fireman's carry.

Not a wrestler and leg grabs aren't really my thing, but the knee tap would seem to me to be the ideal pair in a no gi environment.
