New forum politics discuss hammertime

By unpopular demand, we've gone ahead and set up a forum for you bastards to discuss the US election, which is all but assured to be between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. (I'm voting for Zombie Barry Goldwater).

YMAS rules apply. That means, keep it Safe For Work, and that's about it.

I'd like to post first, just to set the trend of participating despite an admittedly vague awareness of how politics work. Is this election about the economy dead babies or what? What am I supposed to be angriest about?? Aaahhhhh.

As I understand it, this election is about whether or not people can get married to Predator drones while pirating movies from their cells in Guantanamo, soaking up free health care, and getting their bad investments bailed out by the tax payers.

Is it bad that this makes more sense then most of the crap being spewed by the current crop of political commentators?

It's time for our quadrennial "Which lying corporate-sponsored douchebag is promising to do things that more closely align with the things I understand and/or care about," dog and pony show.

What's really fun is that Jefferson was complaining about all these same things in 1790. Andrew Jackson specifically warned of the dangers of corporations sponsoring candidates in the 1830's; and Teddy Roosevelt railed against the industrial complex dictating politics though his entire reign (yes, reign. Teddy reigned, goddammit...).

So whether it's "no new taxes" or "hope and change," remember that a presidential election is just a protracted ad campaign. The product is usually crap, but the marketing is slick, and the game is rigged so you only get two products to chose from. When you think about it (and I do NOT recommend you think about it too much. It's depressing...) every election is just the same "coke or pepsi" decision repeated. Both products are so similar as to be nearly indistinguishable to someone not already heavily invested in one or the other, and you HAVE to chose one.

There's a great political cartoon from that time explaining this, but I'm eating a whopper right now (because Crossfit) and I'll look for it later.
