Essays for Black Belt
Quick question for all on here
When youve been put through for your black belts have you ever had to write an essay on why you want to be a black belt ?
Just wondering out of interest

Its pretty common in the South African Shotokan scene, my cousin certainly had to write one for his Nidan.
That probably doesn't help you at all.

my sensei requires a research paper for shodan in aikido, karate and jujutsu. he says that shodan in judo is hard enough without the paper, so it's not required for judo."Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art. You don't truly love your children unless you allow them to get punched in the face." - chi-conspiricy
"When I was a little boy, I had a sailor suit, but it didn't mean I was in the Navy." - Mtripp on the subject of a 5 year old karate black belt
"Without actual qualifications to be a Zen teacher, your instructor is just another roundeye raping Asian culture for a buck." - Errant108
"Seriously, who gives a **** what you or Errant think? You're Asian males, everyone just ignores you, unless you're in a krotty movie." - new2bjj

I've known others who have had to do this; the only style I can remember where this was a thing was in aikido. I never had to, though.

I think its probably not a bad idea if its a research paper.
I'm concerned that the OP is suggesting its a "why I deserve to be a BB" thing.

No essay but I had a written exam for judo - terminology mostly.

I didn't have to write an essay, but a poem...
Okay maybe more like a lymeric, about a man named John Magee whose *** hung down to his knee...
Or maybe not. Sorry. The only Japanese art I've spent any time with is Judo, where you could be completely illiterate if you knew your throws and could perform on the mat.

No essays here. I even took aikido for a semester as a course at University and didn't have to write an essay. That wasn't for blackbelt though.

I've had written tests in kung fu and arnis, but none of it was essay stuff. Just making sure I knew a bunch of terminology and history, mostly.
