Vermont Beats New York to the Punch, Passes MMA Regulation
While New York sits in a quagmire of politics over regulating mixed martial arts, Vermont has become the 46th state to regulate the sport. UFC officials announced the news on Friday.
“Vermont’s legislation of the sport of MMA is further evidence of the continued growth and success of our sport in this country,” said UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta. “We are pleased that fans in Vermont will now have the opportunity to watch a live UFC event in their own backyard, and look forward to making that happen.”
“We are thrilled with the state of Vermont becoming the 46th state to regulate the sport of Mixed Martial Arts,” said Marc Ratner, UFC Senior Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs. “We look forward to working with their athletic commission in forming the rules and regulations of this great sport.”
Only New York and Connecticut remain unregulated, while Alaska and Wyoming lack the necessary regulatory bodies to oversee the sport.
Doubt the UFC will have an event there, according to a certain site "Vermont is the 6th least extensive and the 2nd least populous of the 50 United States."

Hey now, the high school gym in Brattleboro can hold nearly 400 people, so long as there isn't a big cage or camera set-up in the middle of the room or anything...

I wonder if the number of small MMA events around here will now have to follow things like weight classes.
The closest the UFC will ever come to Vermont is Montreal.

While there will never be a major event in VT, it's nice to finally see the sport recognized and sanctioned.
