Judo rank promotion

"When you can beat your peers at the same grade fairly consistently, and hold your own against the next grade up, it's time to think about testing. Obviously there are demonstrations of a range of techniques performed correctly to be done, but IIRC these are usually done before the test proper, and only once.

In a main test, you therefore have lots of people of a similar standard, all borderline cases. You fight some of them, and have to beat a certain proportion to reach the next grade (typically 5/7 for 1 dan, I think)."

Can anyone confirm this Judo belt promotion procedure?

Not really. It depends on the coach. Generally, we do it if you are beating people your rank all the time and the next above about 40-30% of the time, then you test.

If someone can win against others of his rank 3 times out of 4, would it make him eligible for testing?

At my school Us judo training center. WE get promoted by winning at tournments. Thats the real test /
