This is because New Zealand has the luxury of being in a safe and isolated part of the world, and doens't need to spend billions of dollars on protecting it's borders. The United States, conversely, is surrounded by aggressive military powers on all sides: The Canadians, the Mexicans, and the Mer-Men who live beneath the Atlantic Ocean are all just waiting for a slight chink in America's defenses before they launch a full-scale invasion.

We did it 200 years ago and we'll do it again if we get collectively drunk enough and someone says something mean to poor little Prince Edward Island.

This is a reelection. Romney doesn't need affirmative enthusiasm. He's got tons of negative enthusiasm--many people can't wait to vote against Obama. That's what happened in the 2010 congressional elections--a proxy negative vote against Obama. Let's give it a month or two as the Republican party coalesces around Romney as the nominee.
