Do ask permission. Schools spend thousands of dollars on mats. If they want to be anal about potential scuff marks on their mats, it's their prerogative.

I've seen two compound toe fractures, one on shitty puzzle mats and one on nice, smooth, soft ones. Neither time was anyone doing anything particularly insane.
