After my small student discount I'm paying $38 NZD (about $31 USD) for access to 11 hours of instruction (7 hours of BJJ, 3 hours of MMA, 1 hour of no-gi submission wrestling) and 1 hour of open mat per week. This roughly converts to $8.75 a week, or 80 cents per hour of instruction.

i pay 75 a month for judo, bjj, and mma at a gym that is a member of the american sambo association. i can also train 6 days a week if i want (although i only do 4).

mma gyms are like a box of chocolates, you never know if you're gonna get a boner until it's to late.

I pay C$75 a month (~=US$75) for my son and myself at a small judo club. We go to two kids classes followed by two adult classes a week. But there are various judo and sumo classes on most other days of the week that I could go to if I had time.

The place is just a room with mats - no showers, no change rooms, no motor car, not a single luxury (except tatami).

It honestly depends on your area and quality of your instructor. Places like NYC or DC paying $150+ for top level instruction in BJJ or MMA isn't unheard of.

But it's not comparable. On one end he is looking for a competitive gym to prepare him for competition while getting him into fighting shape and you are comparing it your Martial Arts LaRPing where you play pretend.

You should learn, someday, that words have exact meanings. Month? BJJ has been very popular in the U.S. for over 20 years now. It was developed around 100 years ago, based on an older art, which itself was based on a much, much older art.

C'mon, Daniel...you know you want to study BJJ. Everyone here is saddened by your inner torment. It's time to join the dark side. Even Donnie Yen is doing it....

The nearest BJJ school to me charges £6 (just under $10?) for a two hour lesson. They're at a dedicated gym.

    Judo costs £3.50 (roughly $5.50?) for a 1hr 30mins lesson in a community hall.

To my knowledge, neither school has a monthly "all you can train" option.

For comparison, my Karate school is £30/month ($50ish) (or £5 per lesson, some lessons 1 hour long, some two depending on the venue). There are multiple lessons at different venues every day.

That would be extremely surprising to me, every BJJ club I've ever been to has an unlimited training plan. Have you asked them?

I asked the Judo club - they definitely don't have a monthly option at the moment because they only run one class a week at the moment. They used to do more classes (apparently the instructor that did the weekday classes died last year). A couple of the black belts that go to the weekend classes have just taken a BJA instructor certification course, and they plan to restart the other sessions soon.

I only did BJJ for a short period before coming down with a long term illness and having to take a break. I didn't ask explicitly about monthly payments, so I could be wrong about that, but I saw lots of people (including those who did more than one class a week) handing over money each session, which is what my "to my knowledge" is based on.

I'm a bit late (and bored).

YMCA. 2 classes a week under a 6th Dan who competed at the national level. It ain't the Olympics but good enough for me.

$80 US for a 6 week session. And that's the family rate. I could take my entire household but for now it's just me and my son (11 y.o.). So, $80 / 2 (sessions per week) / 2 (people) / 6 (weeks) = less than $4 per class. When my daughter gets old enough it'll average out to like two and a quarter per class.

Sheesh. You just can't beat the value of an old dude teaching just because he likes teaching. :)

I'd like a bit more newaza, but I'm having a hard time convincing myself that 1) I have time ['cuz I don't] and 2) I could find a better value.

    :)

    Peace favor your sword,
    Kirk
