Sure it saves lives......unless your talking about trying to save your life in a fight. Then it doesn't work out to well.

Um, it's not meant to on its own. It's a conditioning exercise. Squats won't save your ass either. Most people who do squats have no idea how to fight. Get the problem with your statement?

exactly, it's a conditioning exercises and a very good one. like sanchin. you wouldn't fight the way you move in sanchin (atleast I wouldn't) but it gives you strength for fighting.
just like the heavy weight training y'all love so much. you can't fight like you benchpress, pull up, squat, etc. but it gives you strength and power for fighting.

If you can't use the stances you practice, change them. Static positions are for training the leg muscles to be correct in form, and 'feel.' Movement is the true test of a stances' usefulness, and the only way to know if/how they work. If you can move with, and within your stances, you will always be able to use a technique properly. The job of footwork is to move the core around, so the weapons can be brought to bear on the opponent(s). Short, long, high & low. each stance should be practiced to effectiveness in each of these ranges. Nosw, go practice!

As far as not being able to save your life? Hmm. . .say, while involved in a brawl, you got hit with a bat on your left arm, and stabbed on the right. Now what? You die?
We train to be able to take out opponents with only our stances, and footwork. take out their legs, bring them to the ground, and stomp 'em. Have I done this in a real altercation? yeah. Although I used my stance training because I had one dude in a choke and was using him as a shield, and took down one guy using only footwork, then dropped the guy I had in the choke, before addressing the last dude.
