I heard an interview with Gonzalez, and thus decided this was Bullshido-worthy (if not Martial Arts in the News, then here, Boff Topic); seems he choked out the crazed pilot (about halfway down the page).
So many subtopics, so little time. PTSS? Post-9/11 mentalities? TSA? FAA? Pilots' union/pay issues/working conditions?
My opening contribution is that at some point, in high-stress jobs, being younger trumps being more experienced. How do we find that point, and was this guy past it?

The 50-year-old said he knew he act quickly when he saw the captain heading for the emergency exit.
'I just didn't want him opening up that door,' Gonzalez told ABC News. 'I knew if he got in there, we wouldn't be sitting here now.'
If the crazy captain had the strength to open the emergency door in the middle of flight, I'm thinking 4 people might not have been enough to subdue him.
