    Nt'l Collegiate Judo Champtionships

One of the guys from my club won his division at the NCJC a couple a weeks ago. The highlights from the event are below. There was a novice bracket and a blackbelt bracket, so you'll see some pretty significant differences in skill level. It looks to me like athleticism was a deciding factor in the lower brackets but skill took a larger role in the advanced bracket. There was some good ne waza, too.

Some nice Judo there. Seemed an awful lot of green belt- black belt match ups. We're they handing out green belts instead of blue belts or something?

I wasn't there, but I think the advanced division was black belt and the lower divisions were kyu (although, maybe, ikkyu could play in that division, dunno). I see brown on green, etc. but not black on green.

From the youtube comments, the advanced division required blue/white gis, but the lower division did not require different color gis so that's a clue as to who's who. I think our guy is at 2:29 and 4:49 with the seoi nage (what's often called "seoi otoshi").

4:30 looks black on green and 4:38 looks black on orange to me. Maybe I'm colour blind.

I've trained judo (and he sometimes comes into our BJJ school to cross train) with the Uchi-Mata-MONSTER at 6:34. His name is Ajax, and he lives up to it.

I should clarify that I only think it's an uchi mata. I'm not actually good at judo.

Yep, that's uchi mata. Uke was screwed long before that, though. They're in kenka yotsu. Tori is tall guy, has a high collar/back of neck grip, and is pressing his forearm into uke's chest. Uke is bent forward and has his tsurite hand on tori's hip or lightly around his back making it difficult to block or avoid. The uchi mata was almost a foregone conclusion at that point. Uke perhaps should have come in for o/tsuri goshi or even uchi mata.

As I think of it--and this is just a guess--the black belt v. kyu matches may be from the team competitions.

Ajax Tadehara? It looked like him, if so, I trained with him when he was a kid/teenager at ISU in Pocatello, Idaho. I hate to think of the vengence he would reap on me now!
