    You have to be fairly skilled to reliably hit center mass under stress. A small target? No, just no.

    Using this particular case as our hypothetical, I'd guess that Zimmerman would be in hotter water/deeper **** if a now-kneecapped Trayvon were actually able to provide testimony and seek compensation.

    There is about as much chance of the police showing up in time to save you as there is a ninja popping out of the shadows. The police are not there to be personal bodyguards, they are there to clean up the mess afterword and arrest the survivor.

    I don't think he shot him to contain civil liability.

    @Colin:
    It's perfectly possible to shoot someone in the leg and still kill them. There are some very important veins and arteries down there that will kill you dead as Hair Metal if they get perforated. Anytime you fire bullets at someone it's deadly force (force which can kill OR CAUSE SERIOUS BODILY INJURY) so might as well go all in, eh?

    Or, as mi abuelo put it, "Don't ever point a gun at anything you're not willing to kill."

    I was reminded of the Bernie Goetz case from the 80s. This is like a low-rent version of that. You want to see some crazy facts and a serious racial angle, look that one up. Dude shot four black guys on the NYC subway who were about to rob him.

    That goes both ways, Colin. We'd be having a different conversation if M smashed Z's brains into the ground.

    If you are the victim of violence and rendered helpless, whether you live or die is no longer within your control. That's part of why we permit self-defense as a justification for homicide.
