    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    help me settle an argument

So i've been repeatedly butting heads and rubbing dicks with a dude on judoforum named glorfindel. He has all the classical marks of a catch wrestler: disdains guard, sounds like he goes balls to the wall all the time, repeats "not all grappling is BJJ!" like a mantra to keep away the tears at night, etc.*

But what most disturbs me about him is that he proudly claims to toehold guys on their first day of class. Now am I out of my mind or is this a dick move? Aren't you asking to **** up someone's knee? He claims it's perfectly safe but...

Can't link you to the thread, unfortunately, judoforum's search function is down.

*I'm beginning to realize that the only signifigant difference between a catch wrestler and a cokehead is a couple dozen protein shakes

He's a douche. He will remain one long after you stop "butting heads" with him. If he needs to do that to someone walking in the door then he sucks as a grappler.

Typical Alpha Male trait; feels he has to establish dominance from the beginning of a relationship, telling, not asking and leading, not following.

Well stop rubbing dicks with him. That's not something you do for jerks.

Toe holds are no more and no less dangerous than an arm or shoulder lock. When applied with control, there is plenty of time for the holded (holdee?) to know that it is time to give up before the joint goes pop. When thrown on with a heart full of hate and fear....the result is somewhat different. Also they work by attacking the ankle, not the knee joint. Which is not to say that a wrenched ankle isn't a problem, but it isn't quite as serious as having your knee turned into pea gravel the way a heel hook does.

As the the seperate issue of submitting guys on their first night....isn't that part of the BJJ Conversion story?

"I was lost in the folly of my tang su do/ninjitsu/size and football background and then a much smaller man repeatedly choked and armlocked me. Then I saw the light, I saw the light, no more in darkness, no more in night. Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in, praise Helio, I saw the light."

Now, if he's leglocking people in a judo class, he's obviously a doodyhead and the only appropriate response is to follow him into the locker room after randori and buffet him about the head and shoulders with a metal folding chair.

This. My first thought was "you don't leglock in Judo". I remembered Judoforum has "general grappling" forums etc though.

That dude sounds like a giant douche. Sounds like he needs to hear my ground coach's "going 110% means you are 10% out of control" quote and then get dominated while stuck on in bottom position. And maybe get heel hooked by Palhares.

Didn't even know you could do that on JF. Anyway, someone needs to be there when people are posting vids of Josh Barnett doing "guard" "passing".

Vince: While that may be true, the consequences of fucking up are much, much worse. I think the ideal way to start new dudes is by taking their back and choking them.

In a more general martial arts sense, I would describe the toe hold thing as "beating the new guys with gimmicks", which instills in them a desire to learn all the gimmicks, whereas beating the new guys with solid basics instills a desire for solid basics. One leads to a technically sound competitor, one leads to youtube.

Guy sounds like a fuckstick, why you wasting your time on him?

Also Vince you may be right ... but I 'thought' the reason those kinds of subs were dangerous is because when you actually start feeling pain from it, it's already done bad damage.
