newKickboxing Ontario to oversee children's mixed martial arts
Kickboxing Ontario will now oversee amateur mixed martial arts in the province.
The Liberal government has given its stamp of approval to the group's application to be the governing body for amateur MMA.
Kickboxing Ontario will sanction every event and appoint a chief official who can shut down any competition that doesn't follow the rules.
The government says it wants to ensure the safety of kids who participate in the sport.
Children as young as 10 can participate in amateur MMA, which is done on mats and involves light contact.
The government says amateur MMA athletes win competitions by accumulating points, but hits to the head are not allowed
I recommend you head over and lulz at the comments.
I like this one
There are some forms [styles] of Martial Arts that are not allowed to even have tournaments because of their propensity to cause serious injury, especially in the Kung Fu genre, Chow Gar being one example. Once studied, these techniques are ingrained in the fighter, and will manifest themselves given the circumstance where they may prove an effective game-changer. Tell me then, do you suppose the "mixture" precludes all of these more damaging moves, and/or depends on the fighter to control themselves to the degree that these tactics would only be applied "lightly", for risk of being "penalized"? Not that there's anything wrong with that. OK, got it.
What the hell does light contact mma look like?
