There's a slight chance that I overreacted. I've done something Very Bad (tm) to my knee and haven't been able to train for a couple weeks and the hydrocodone has knocked out my filters. The training group idea sounds like a good one, if you can find one that's not just a bunch of LARPers.

Yeah, I figured he was recommending it. Lynn Thompson also recommends one, but as part of one of those big Gundam self defense suits that allow you to totally wail on your training partner. In the beginning, if they can touch the mask with the knife, they got you. No need to rock the head back with a hard power stab with a hard trainer (a fencing mask's not especially safe for that anyway). In my mind, if you need a cervical collar with a fencing mask, you're subjecting your mask to a level of force that can cave it in (I've had 2 cave in, one from a training knife stab and one from a roundhouse kick). I had no collar either time, and I didn't really get whiplash or anything.
However, if it's used for a reason other than protecting the neck when the head is jarred, I may be mistaken. Plenty of people teach head and spine manipulations after an arm drag or something in order to take down someone with a knife. Maybe its used for practicing that kind of stuff (but I kinda doubt a cervical collar would protect against twisting force to the neck). In my mind, that's the kind of stuff that you just have to lower the intensity to make it safe, not use gear. -

We do fang chokes and punyos to the neck after the takedown. We don't wear collars and don't have any problems. As long as you control yourself and respect the tap, you are not going to hurt anyone. The problem, IMHO, would be if you had a bunch of noobs trying to figure out stick/knife fighting and going overboard.
And I wear a hockey helmet with cage on it. It does me pretty well, but is freaking loud when you get a shot to the head. But to me that's good.Combatives training log.
