Striking with Handguns

So on the recommendation of another servicemember, who's also a paramedic, not to mention a fellow firearms enthusiast, I started DVRing the show "The Best Defense" on the Outdoor Network.

I'm currently watching an episode focused on the Tueller Drill, also known as the "21 Foot Rule"; the range at which a guy with a knife is likely to get off the first attack on someone with a holstered weapon before the victim can draw and get a shot off.

I was trying to find a decent video of this, but because YouTube is torturing my netbook, instead, here's a fuckstick trying to be funny:



Anyway, one of the responses to a gun in holster vs. knife attacker scenario, on the show, was to parry/block/eat the attack with the offhand while drawing, pop the dude in the face with the muzzle of the gun while backing up, then having gained a bit of distance, fire into him.

My questions are:

1. Is there anyone out there who would advocate this as realistic?

2. Does anyone want to invest start-up capital to sell strike bezel attachments for handguns?

Perhaps. What kind of amounts are you looking for? I like this idea.

I'm wondering if a bezel attachment significant enough to make a difference in striking would require a special holster, and would it affect marksmanship?

If you can overcome the static pat-a-cake drill format common to many Filipino Arts (as I have seen taught around here at least) I think there is a nugget of useful technique there.

While the risk is probably less than one would expect, I would be prepared deal with a possible "out of battery" malfunction after using the pistol as an impact weapon.

1. It could work if your quick, and it would help to have a hand cannon with atleast a seven inch barrel for the weight. With a more compact hand gun you can strike them with the bottom of the grip like a hammer fist, or perform something almost like knife hand with the angled edge at bottom and front of the grip. It would be faster and safer to just fire the gun. Some dude with a sword, a vest, and a saucer full of cocaine is probably the worst case scenario.

A thread protector on a threaded barrel is pretty "bezel like" as it is...

I know they strike with the handgun in the Dog Brothers Die Less Often material, where the LEO has his pistol drawn, but the quarters are too close to bring the muzzle to bear, or by doing so, it would open him up to the attacker's weapon.

Reluctant to use the sidearm as a striking weapon. Worried about malfunctions should attempt to fire after gaining reaction distance. Our agency trained with sidelining and off-hand strikes while drawing for close in attacks. Had initially reviewed the survival theory/reaction distance in Surviving Edged Weapon Attacks.
