    List of recommended schools?

After noticing yet another thread asking for a recommended school in the ___ area, combined with the fact that it took me 6 months to discover my current BJJ school, I am left wondering if there is some way we can pool our resources and create some sort of "Schools that Don't Suck" list.

If everyone adds the names of 3 or 4 schools in their area, we'd have quite a good resource for site visitors who want to know something like "Are there any non-mcdojo WT schools near Minneapolis?"

Obviously, a few crappy/aikido schools would end up on the list anyway, but it would still likely be quite useful.

(Perhaps allow only users with over 500 posts or so to add to the list to prevent someone from just creating an account and adding his own school?)

There's the first one that comes to mind right off. Couple of BJJ schools south of me in TN, I can pull up, which I think are at least fair. Checking on a judo instructor in Williamsburg, KY, south of Corbin for my little brother.

I agree, a central database of 'No Bullshido' schools has been an idea on this website since the beginning. From what I remember, though, there's some reasons this might not be workable.

    1) Who gets the thumbs-up? The Bullshido-ness of schools usually isn't black and white, but a shades-of-grey kind of thing. Coming up with a criteria would have to be a first step.

    2) How big should this database be? There are tens of thousands of martial arts schools in just North America alone. The good thing about the computer age is that you can make the database as big as you like, you just have to keep it updated and current. Trying to get even coverage of an area is also a laudable goal.

    3) Trust but Verify? This being an internet forum, you can't just take someone's word. A trusted and respect 'agent' would need to visit and participate at a school to gauge it's worth. That's a lot of time and energy to devote to a project that size.

    4) Positive or Negative? To avoid the usual hassles, you would have to use a system of 'approval' rather than rating schools and saying "Yeah, this one's great, but this other one one sucks". Just showing the ones who pass muster would be the way to go.

Personally, I think this would be a laudable goal, in theory. The hard part would definitely be the execution. Getting someone reliable to check out each and every school on the list would be a daunting task. Something to think about, at least. . .
"I had once talked to Billy Conn, the boxer, about professionals versus amateurs - specifically street fighters. One had always heard rumors of champions being taken out by back-alley fighters. Conn was scornful. "Aw, it's like hitting a girl," he said. "They're nothing."
