Given the choices you have presented, if money is not an issue, then I'd say go with the SCAR 17SA. The SCAR is going to be a lot more expensive, though. Both are gas piston driven, so don't have the problems associated with a direct impingement gas system. The SCAR is lighter and more modular, so you can change barrel lengths fairly easily. With an M14 type rifle, you pretty much have to choose a barrel length and live with it. I prefer the full length barrel, as it is more accurate at longer ranges, but that's my choice. The SCAR 17SA has an inline stock, so I suspect it has a lot less muzzle flip than the M14.
Phrost, was the heavy barreled M14 in your armory also glass bedded? Glass bedding also adds weight to the rifle. My rifle is not light and I get a bit of a work out when I hunt via stalking. -

Some numbers:
M14 in standard configuration - 9.2lbs unloaded (fully loaded 20rd magazine = 1.5lbs)
M14 EBR - unloaded about 12lbs w/o scope base, rings, scope and bipod; just under 15lbs with scope mount, rings, scope and bipod.
My match tuned M14 with medium weight barrel and glass bedding - 11.8lbs unloaded.
