The era thing is a bit of bullshit, as mentioned earlier, the "strikers" used wrestling to stay off the ground. I have serious doubts there is "eras', I prefer to use the idea of "stages of evolution".
BJJ dominated until wrestlers were able to counter BJJers, but then strikers dominated because they were able to counter wrestlers AND BJJers. But in saying that, they were still primarily strikers.
Here is an example:
BJJers:
Ground game- 9
Takedowns- 5
Striking- 1
Wrestlers:
Ground game- 7
Takedowns- 9
Striking- 2 (ground n pound, etc)
Strikers:
Ground game- 5
Takedowns- 5
Striking- 9
All rounders:
Ground game- 7
Takedowns- 7
Striking- 7
I tend to see it better as one of those old school video games where if you gave yourself more speed, it would subtract handling, or more strength meant less endurance/ accuracy.
Eras? No. Evolution may eventually show us which is the strongest, but only when all rounders are truly "all rounders", which I don't think will happen soon (the coaches will have to have evolved into true all rounders as well, in my mind), but in our lifetime, yes. I also hypothesise that it will be striking that is found to be the ultimate , provided everything else is balanced. -
