    Having read a fair bit of his philosophy on self-defense, his thinking reminds me a LOT of the essay recently written by Sam Harris. I recall something he wrote about violence. Something to the effect of "They are not trying to fight you. They are trying to assassinate you. Big difference."

    I'm going to assume it was useless. I say this because I am an ass but also because it sounds like you are going about your weight training in a random way. What is your goal? Reps or weight? What are you trying to achieve? What lift or lifts are you doing? If you can give a clear map of your goals it might be easier to help you figure out where you're going.

    Yeah, but as long as I use 5 reps and a calculator, my 1rm is awesome - why would I want to actually test it and screw that up?

    In order to add value to the conversation, I agree with HBAD - if you've got a plan it's probably best to stay consistent with that plan. If not, perhaps you should develop a plan and follow it. :)

    Unless Greg Valentino is your coach and that pearl of wisdom is part of your training strategy that answer is bullshit. You make a plan and follow that plan. That is how you make progress when training. Otherwise you're wasting time and inviting injury.
