i agree i always thought, if you can't grab a fist trying to kock you out

how can you catch a hand holding a knife trying to kill you and "disarm" it

    stick to weights and sterodis

Having read a fair bit of his philosophy on self-defense, his thinking reminds me a LOT of the essay recently written by Sam Harris. I recall something he wrote about violence. Something to the effect of "They are not trying to fight you. They are trying to assassinate you. Big difference."
"We often joke -- and we really wish it were a joke -- that you will only encounter two basic problems with your 'self-defense' training.

    2) That it does work"

I'm going to assume it was useless. I say this because I am an ass but also because it sounds like you are going about your weight training in a random way. What is your goal? Reps or weight? What are you trying to achieve? What lift or lifts are you doing? If you can give a clear map of your goals it might be easier to help you figure out where you're going.

Yeah, but as long as I use 5 reps and a calculator, my 1rm is awesome - why would I want to actually test it and screw that up?

In order to add value to the conversation, I agree with HBAD - if you've got a plan it's probably best to stay consistent with that plan. If not, perhaps you should develop a plan and follow it. :)

is this where he boasts about sliding a training knife across someone's throat in a seminar while he was being grappled into submission?

Oh man... When that guy first came around the corner in the knife fighting video, I thought he was going to slit the dark-haired dudes throat and end the shortest "knife fighting" lesson in history.

Unless Greg Valentino is your coach and that pearl of wisdom is part of your training strategy that answer is bullshit. You make a plan and follow that plan. That is how you make progress when training. Otherwise you're wasting time and inviting injury.
