I just stumbled on this thread..
I tried some Iaido for a few months and I'm pretty sure the lineage they held claim to was Akayama Ryu.
Sensei Bill Mears in St. Catharines, Ontario..he was a good instructor.

I'm confused why it's called Akayama Ryu when the bloke who invented it, wasn't Japanese.

Still trying to convert me to the Koryu Dark Side, I see.

Thank you, but I'm hip deep in BJJ and JKD at the moment, and my wife would kill me if I picked up yet another martial art. Believe me, I'm interested in a true kenjutsu style at some point in my life, but we can't have it all.

Hello folks, sorry I've been away for a bit.
If you have any questions about Akayama Ryu you will have to talk to my Sensei. As I don't feel I am qualified as a Go-kyu to attempt to explain it. You can email him from the link you provided above.
    *edit*
Although I remember a member with username "Mekugi" talked to my Sensei about it on budoseek.net
Where my Sensei is/was(since he doesn't get on forums anymore) a moderator. If that helps.

Jikishinkage is a popular name *that I am aware of*
Jikishinkage for our lineage from what I can remember has different Kanji in its usage compared to the sword school.
Jikishinkage is also used for small naginatajutsu/bojutsu school and even smaller sojutsu school.

Akayama Ryu is a gendai system founded by Alex Marshall in 1988. He, Richard Worthington and I had previously studied under Toshiaki Takikawa in his family's bugei system of Jikishinkage Ryu. While I am aware of multiple systems using this name, to my knowledge, there is no mention of this particular style in any of the lists of koryu. Toshi lives in the Atlanta area. He is an active member of USJJF and operated a dojo in Tulsa, OK for a number of years. Any further questions on the history of Jikishinkage Ryu and the Takikawa (sometimes spelled Takigawa) family should be directed to him. When I last spoke to him, he was employed at Kubota Tractor in Gainesville, Ga.

Mr. Marshall, my Judo & Jujutsu sensei, held high rank in Jikishinkage Ryu as well as Tomiki Aikido and Judo. He incorporated kata from Jikishinkage Ryu into the Akayama Ryu system. As for how the name came about, I had a dojo in Birmingham, AL named Akayama Dojo after the mountain Birmingham was built around, Red Mountain. Mr. Marshall choose to use that name as it related to both the Japanese and local connections to the style.

Shinin Ryu was/is (I have never trained in it or met any instructors) a Jujutsu style Mr. Marshall trained in. To be honest, he was dismissive of it, saying that he believed it had been created by a someone who did not have a deep understanding of Jujutsu principles but rather took cliches (weak overcomes strong, etc.) at face value. He studied it while living in the Chicago area at the request of his Judo sensei who was ranked in i
