This is a potential derail and you just argued semantics. Yes, I respect all of those, that deserve it, who volunteered regardless of where they served. All the people that I know, who served stateside and didn't fight, do not call themselves veterans.
That's a personal distinction that I've noticed and may not apply to you. Still a MABS threads is the wrong place to argue this distinction.

Agreed that any service is honourable but the title of veteran, in every instance I have encountered, means veteran of combat; the term implies combat experience.
Service stands as a baseline as anyone who want's to and can get accepted can give their service. Veteran is a title reserved for those who are deployed in combat. -

Let's be specific in our discussion.
I haven't stated that Bushey's service wasn't "honorable" what I clearly stated, is that 34 months of home service does not equate to being a "veteran" when compared to those who are actively spending considerable periods of their military service deployed to active war zones.
Stating that you're a vet with such a short term of service where one never left the safety of one's home country is ambiguous to say the least. Then when you add in the other aspects of this equation, such as claiming to be Pararescue when one's military records conflict with that claim, then OPENLY denying one has ever made that claim just adds further justification for questioning the legitimacy of the information presented in the public domain."To sin by silence when one should protest makes cowards out of men".

As a civilian, I didn't realize that veteran had a specific connotation for those of you that have served. I was under the assumption that anyone who put on the uniform (and didn't get dishonorably discharged) fit under the umbrella. My mistake. Even under my erroneously broad defintion of veteran, though, Mr. Bushey's claims don't hold up and need to be further investigated.

You know, I usually back Ho Ho FU (a.k.a. Rock Ape) on this kind of stuff, but I've got to step in and say that he's completely wrong on this one. Sorry, guy.
I'm sure the gentleman being referenced in MABS is a right **** with inflated claims and general asshattery. But don't you dare say that my service doesn't count for me being a veteran because I haven't been shot at. I did exactly what my country asked of me, and so far they haven't asked me to get kersploded at. They have asked me to be far away from home for months at a time and do difficult and sometimes dangerous things. Mostly, though, my service has been somewhat unremarkable, but that does not mean I am not a veteran. I am just not a combat veteran.
Veteran has so much emotional baggage associated with it, let's not "One True Scotsman" it into a nigh-unattainable goal. Service to your country is enough, no need to add qualifiers.
(If you need to see my bona fides to have this discussion, just PM me for them. I don't really care about tags, I just wanted to stick up for a term.)Last edited by Rock Ape; 12/16/2011 11:58am at . Reason: Setting font back to default

Did IQ's drop sharply over night ?
I'm going to spell this out because I'm not going to fucking repeat myself for the umpteenth time.
I'M TALKING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT WALTER BUSHEY'S SERVICE - NO ONE ELSE
Is that clear enough ?

Compared to someone who has LIED about their MOS
Someone who claimed to have more experience that they actually had.
Someone who then blatently DENIED the lie depite there being written evidence otherwise..
Then in his case YES."To sin by silence when one should protest makes cowards out of men".
