What's with this new trend of making video game trailers this way?

Gears of War was the first game I can remember doing this, taking the piano cover of that tune from Donnie Darko (anyone remember the original Tears for Fears version?) and juxtaposing it with the futuristic combat and giant alien bugs. It definitely made that trailer stand out...I've never even played GOW, but I remember the trailer well.

Now they're all doing it.

Is it an attempt to latch onto new Gen Y emo crybaby gamers, or are they trying to pull at the heartstrings of the now gruff and grizzled veterans of 1980's pop culture?

That's why. Anybody can put together a bunch of actions shots with hard rock/techno playing. By using a good slow tune who's lyrics mix well with the visuals you separate it from the herd.

I can also see it getting old, overplayed, or they start using terrible songs and then they start using other genres with their test audiences.

What's next? Hip hop?

Will the next Transformers game include an overdub of EPMD's "You Got's Ta Chill" as Optimus and Megatron grapple for supremacy? I can see it.

Side note on the TF: Fall of Cybertron trailer: My 7 year old is in love with this trailer and is asking me daily if he can watch it, and asking how many days until Fall 2012.

Seriously? Do you live in America? Getting old and over played? Hahaha that's some funny ****. Oh and lol@hi-hop. That was one of the aspects that people loved about GTA and The Burnout series.

Yeah my wife and I have this discussion daily, everything in American culture is being recycled because creativity is stagnant, especially on television. Hawaii 5-0? Charlie's Angels? Transformers G1? There are at least a dozen versions of "Star Search" going on right now...X-Factor, American Idol, The Voice...this is why I never watch television anymore.

It's like that show "Life on Mars", I think I was shot and woke up in 1985.

Unlike lots of American parents though, my kid's aren't going near games like GTA or Mortal Kombat for a while.

Giant robot wars and mushroom eating plumbers get a pass.
