But as Mir showed on Saturday, anybody has a chance to win any time, and though I picked Mir I didn't expect it to go down like that, so I almost dismiss my pick as lucky. Which is exactly what you need in any fight against anyone: a measure of luck.
I completely agree with all these statements. I don't understand the point you're trying to make about the cornermen though.

My argument is basically that it's stupid for people (i.e. Bullshido posters) to say Frank Mir has no chance at a title just because the hype machine has convinced them that Overeem, JDS, etc are the ****. I think it's going to be quite a while before the dust settles on the heavyweight division and I think the title is up for grabs. I believe it will change hands more often than it is defended successfully and I think Mir has as good a chance as anyone at the moment to grab it, at least briefly.

Then I misunderstood you and agree.

With that kind of shoulder dislocation, at that kind of angle with that kind of force, is this the end of Big Nog as a Heavyweight contender? I think his rotator cuff just got wrecked.

Most likely the end of his career anyhow. Time it will take to heal that plus rehab plus his age adds up to retirement looking like a pretty good idea.

How many former top level MMA fighters have really retired when it looked like a good idea, though?

There's voluntary retirement and then there's permanently medical disqualifying injury retirement.

There are breaks and then there are breaks. Mir is an example. He broke is femur and took the better part of a decade coming back. I'm glad it wasn't the shoulder. But three years of rehabilitation before he gets back to form and then a few years playing catch up. Just so long as the rotator cuff is intact. Big Nog's a war machine. Stay or go, when he's done fighting, he deserves to be whole.

Doctor reports are that Big Nog will be able to begin training again in a few months and be ready to compete again within half a year. So all the talk of career-ending is way premature.
