I’d guess it’s similar to stage hypnosis, which does not operate via any trance but rather suggestion, participant compliace due to expectation and pressure from the audience to perform, and so on; along with good old peer pressure and deference to authority: “All these senior students are affected by his powers, and he’s such a wise and respected old master, that it must be true. I’ll feel it any moment. There, I feel something, that must be the magical power!” The martial arts frauds of course have the advantage of working on the same victims for a very long time, so they have it easier than stage hypnotists, who may have to work on brand new participants every show. I wonder how common it is among these jokers to demonstrate these things only on, say, black belts or other senior students who have had plenty of time to become indoctrinated.
Still, it would be very interesting to hear an inside account, i.e. someone who used to believe in this stuff; and it would be interesting to see a real analysis; perhaps by a skeptic magician. I bet Derren Brown or Penn & Teller could come up with interesting things to say about it.[ petterhaggholm.net | blog | essays ]

that seems legit
yeah it sucks how some of the shittiest places quality wise have some of the best facilities.
Interestingly, this phenomenon is transcultural. I was watching an episode of No Reservations taking place in Thailand and they had the exact same **** going on there. The segment started off with some legit, if not parlor trickish, stuff (like judo shopping lead plates, etc), but then went into their 'control the spirit' of the other man qi/ki/IS type bullshit. The commentator was somewhat speechless and you could tell he was trying hard not to talk bad about what he was seeing. -
