How to escape from a side headlock

**The Nice way**Bring your right arm up and over the left side of the holder's face and place the knife edge of your hand directly under the nose of your opponent. Now push up and back on the nose to tilt the holder's head back, then push down and around in a circle towards your left side. As you do this, take a step with your right foot and drop to your knee, bringing the holder down to the ground.
There are other not so nice ways, which we won't go into :-) -

The way to counter a lot of things is just to either rush the battle or rush the attacker. In other words if he twists you one way then you move that way ahead of him. (taking away his leverage) You get there first and attack. Often this involves rushing or crowding him. Many throws can be countered by simply crowding a guy and grabbing him or wrapping his waist.

Rear Naked -
First thing is to try to relieve some of the pressure on your neck, pull down on the choking arm and try to get your chin down.
You need to now turn into the choke, if he's choking with the right you turn to the right. You can only do this if you first release the opposite hook ie. the one hooking your left hip.
You must do this before the sub is sunk in otherwise you'll never get out, it's hard.
P.s If he has a gi/clothing on you can use this to help relieve the pressure, try and grab far up near the shoulder and pull down.
Hope this is clear enough, if not tell me.

Against rear naked choke.
You are probably screwed but grab the arm that is pushing the back of your head and get it out of there to relieve pressure and do what SLJ said. Watch out for gi chokes if wearing thick clothes.
Armbar- Get top position. Stack the opponent, grab your own hand, and try to get your elbow out. Stomp on his face (but NEVER release pressure from the back of his neck and ground)
Kneebar- roll sideways so your knee is not facing him directly. Bend your leg and start working for a toe-hold of your own.
Head lock-
Punch him in the balls until he lets go (if the headlock is the one in the above picture). Get his back and choke him out.
Guillotine-
Get your chin in the way so he doesn't get a complete grip around your neck to buy you time.
Take him down, pass guard, dig your fingers into his eyes until he lets go, once he does then smash his face from top position.
Kimura- Straighten your arm and turn it as best you can. With your free hand hook his foot if it's hitched wrong and pass guard. If his feet aren't hitched, push on one leg and pass guard.

Rear Naked Choke -
If you are lucky you might get someone who crosses their ankles (like I have seen taught many times - not in a bjj school).
I was initially taught many many years ago to just cross the ankles to keep the person from getting away (long before the first UFC). This worked great against people who knew no counters - they would pretty much just give up as soon as I got the arms in place becuase they thought their was no counter.
Many years later when I took my first bjj class I was able to get a rear naked choke on a bjj blue belt - I crossed my ankles - I was positive I had the guy and about 1 second later I was tapping so fast and hard it was silly.
All he did was cross his ankles over mine - his left calf went over my right ankle (my right ankle was on top) and then he crossed his right over his left and squeezed - I decided to tap rather than let my ankle break :-)
