    Aikisambo

Here at the US Navy base in Yokosuka, there is a Japanese man claiming to teach a combination of Aikido and Sambo with the creative name "Aikisambo". He mainly markets this to the military and teaches classes on base but he has a dojo out in town too. I was wondering if anybody had ever heard of this stuff before...I'd love to learn Sambo, but not so interested in learning Aikido..

P.S. How do I go about getting a military tag?

It will be his own creation, so you can be sure that it's fairly unknown.
Get some information on the guy: his ranking and lineage for the Aikido and SAMBO, his name, place of his club, etc...

About the Militairy Tag, PM Phrost (PM functionality will appear after 50 posts) with some evidence that you are in the Militairy.

Have fun here and see you around,
    Zendo

    Edit: was it this guy?

Yes! That's the guy...doesn't seem like he has very much background in Sambo at all...I doubt a lot of it found its way into the stuff he teaches.

My impression also, but just check out one of his classes to be sure.
If it looks like a Judo/Bjj class with some Aikido it could still be good.
If it looks like Aikido with some leglocks...just run and never look back.

Yeah, that's also the same guy. Now that I think about it, Wednesdays at 1900 is right after my wrestling practices...guess I'll stick around and watch, even though I do remember seeing what appeared to be a bunch of weirdos in gis show up at the end of each practice...

Apparently he's teaching classes alongside Victor Koga, if that adds any legitimacy to his sambo credentials.

It is kinda hard to tell from looking at the pictures, but most of it looks more like aikdo to me. I see a lot of wrist locks. But depending on what sambo people you talk to, this wouldn't be that big of a deal. But I don't see a lot of throwing pics.

    This pic:

    http://ryuseikan.webs.com/apps/photo...otoid=50564750

is different than I would be doing it. I would have tried to get the full saddle position and then work the leg for a heel hook or achilles lock. He is holding for a choke(I think) and doing some type of twister type move of the leg(like trying to stretch the legs). I don't think it would be the more effecient way of doing it, but it is hard to tell in a pic because I may be taking it completely out of context.

Best bet would be to watch a couple of classes. If they do a lot of throwing and ground fighting, I would stay. Lots of wrist locks, I would leave.

edit: Unless you are looking for wrist locks. Looking at more pics, it looks a lot like stuff we did in the academy. I don't prefer it, but some people do.
