I heard an interesting story a couple years ago related to the wall penetration issue. This story is unconfirmed by me. It came through a friend of a friend. I have no reason not to believe it and I'll relay it as it was told to me.
The police department this guy worked for decided to require their SWAT team to use frangible ammo in their M4s to reduce overpenetration. Not sure why that weapon was chosen for their particular use, but whatever.
So they kick in the door on a drug raid and encounter an armed subject. Apparently he puts a round of 5.56 right in the guy's forehead and it basically scalped him as it shattered and glanced off his skull. It dropped him obviously and he was a bloody mess and didn't want to fight anymore, but he lived.
Just one instance, but food for thought for anyone who thinks about going with the frangible ammo option for home defense. I'll stick to conventional ammo myself. -

I don't know who you were addressing with that question, but the minimum load I would recommend is #4 buckshot. That you brought up birdshot for defensive use further emphasizes my earlier point:
You should note what the site I linked has to say about birdshot for defensive use:

#3 buck in 20ga in my shotgun when I used to have it. 124gr JHP in my 9mm.
There is absolutely no reason not to carry with a round in the chamber, unless like said before, shitty training, shitty holster, shitty gun.
Anything with a firing pin block and more than 4# of trigger pull, I feel fine carrying hot and cocked. My favorite mode of carry though, is a nice long DA pull first shot.
