I refer you to Gezere's observation. If a person chooses to escalate the level of contact, they should be prepared for their opponent to do the same.
If the lower skilled combatant does this, the rest of the altercation will very likely be much worse than if they'd never resorted to "dirty fightin'".
During normal sparring, grabbing behind the clavicle is wholly inappropriate.If you do not test yourself against the unknown, how can you truly know if the tools you possess actually work? -

To be more direct this is being a dick:
For 2 reasons.In class we were doing free rolling, I went to put my knee on the other guys calf because I know this causes pain and it was stopping him pulling guard.
1) It is just painful and won't stop anything if your opponent is skilled.
2) Why are you trying to stop him from pulling guard? You should be learning how to pass.
In general stopping someone from going to a normal position in the very beginning of a roll is a dick move. You are both trying to learn and most of the time people are just trying to fall into a starting position. In tournament or drilling sure try to stop someone from getting guard but in practice learn to pass. -
