The dojang I go to gives black stripes to children when they do very well in a class, and if they have 5 or more when they test for the next rank they get a red star for their dobok collar. It's just a little way to motivate them.

Wow. My instructor only does 3 stripes per belt. But I've seen kids at tournaments with belts like this. It's fucking ridiculous. And when I say kids, I don't just mean little kids. I've seen people in my divisions with these crazy looking belts and with stripes like the back part of the belt and stuff.

I figured the black stripes meant how many months they have been at that belt rank. (shrugs) Seems logical, but then again......thats like 9 months at Yellow belt for that poor kid.

When i was in Taekwondo in Oregon our stripes were way cooler. WE HAD PURPLE striples! TOP THAT you boring black striped people!
But then we also had black brownm blue red and more colors and you had to get 5 to be allowed to test. The purple were just for good merits.

I didn't read the original post that way at all.. More specifically I read a post which was mocking the system which placed children in a position of having multiple stripes on a non-blackbelt.

May be one or two for the more senior colours like purple or brown but yellow.. FFS

Soofties. In my day we would mock all children until they cried from the harassment then we would use the business end of the belt to ensure they stopped crying.
