So I dislocated my shoulder last month
and all is well except for a particular range of motion I am incapable of. I am unable to lift my arm over my head in a butterfly motion without a sharp stabbing pain. I wonder if any of you out there tore your rotator cuff and if this is similiar to that condition. I ask you only because I am really freaking out, I'm supposed to fight in July and I thought this whole shoulder thing would be history. My doctor is getting me an MRI this week to make sure. If I tore the cuff I am royally screwed.

that supraspinatous is so small yet so significant.

I've said it before and I'll say it again ART. Go try it out before you do anything more drastic. You will be amazed at the amount of good this can do for you. Go to www.activerelease.com and check it out, find the practitioner nearest you and give it a shot.

SmackDown, if you aren't a doctor, you should really stop pushing this stupid active release on everyone when it is clear you don't understand the condition. No ammount of overly grandiose massage is going to reattach the tendon of his supraspinatus muscle.
Well, it does sound like a supraspinatus tear but there is a small outside chance it could be bad tendonitis. The MRI will be able to confirm the diagnosis. Are you being seen by a shoulder specialist or an orthopedic surgeon?
I dislocated my shoulder a couple years ago and had surgery to repair a bankart lesion. I did experience a good deal of rotator cuff tendonitis during the recovery. If it IS torn, it may need to be surgically repaired. If it does not need surgical repair, then you'll probably be put on a cuff strengthening routine with elastic cords to strengthen and tighten your cuff up. You probably have been evaluated, but if you are young (18-30) then it is very important that you be evaluated for glenohumeral instability as you may be at a high risk for repeat dislocation.
Now, I am not sure about the following, but it may be possible to fight with it anyway. If it is very important that you do fight in July, you should tell your doctor about this and you can work that into your treatment goals. Good luck, man. Rotator cuff injuries suck.

you ninja fags just got owned in a bad way. this thread should go to the classics and mega thread forum due to the sheer size of taebo_master and gajusceaser's penis. (with which they just smacked across these ninja's faces)

I can only agree with Gajus Caesar.
Smackdown - the manipulative therapy you suggest may very well have it's benefits.
However, FIRST you have to establish the diagnosis and then you can start treatment.
It sounds like JBliss' doc is doing the right thing with the MRI which will give a very good idea about what is going on.
Once that is established, you can start treating and if it is a rotator cuff tear, the pros and cons of an operation and/or physio can be discussed. And that is best done with a doctor who can actually talk to the patient and examine him. Not on an internet forum.
With regards to the fight in July : There will always be another fight but you have only one body.

Thanks guys...gajus I appreciate the advice...I'm going to do everything possible to stay from under the knife, no amount of rehab to much no time period too long, I DO NOT want ot get cut unless it would be foolish not to. I have a great orthopedic surgeon and he's totally on my side with this whole issue, he wants to see me work thru it as well and seeing as I'm in my early twenties it is a deffinite possibility. I have been researching this feverishly for the last two weeks and i just wanted to know what some people who have been there know and think. It amazes me how much information and sound advice can come thru this forum, and I honestly thank you for helping me with what is turning into quite a hurdle in my near future.
