Regarding context: a dark side of JMA can be a preoccupation with tradition and orthodoxy. The only examples that come to mind of a radical reform to an art are when someone splinters off to start a new one! It looks like Tankendo follows this trend, as the tactical knives and carbines of modern militaries would require considerably smaller training analogs.
It would be so cool if someone pulled a Takashi Azuma and made a Todo (刀道) that truly prioritised practicality over tradition. I can dream, right?
