Do you warm-up and stretch before a street fight? Will that matter if you do it sparingly? Maybe, but probably no. Are you fucking stupid and begging for injury if you never do it and frequently engage your body intensely? Hell yes.

    On the shattered hand part...

I think in many instances things that happened, back then, pretty much becomes legend to an extent. It carries and mutates from there. As an example, back then, i'd assume that most practitioners of martial arts were believed to be or exist at a higher level, achieve certain things that the average person would deem as amazing. If you were accepted you did, and were. The problem with that is, that not all humans, or anything else for that matter is created equal. Some are more flexible, some have differences that may or may not give them advantages under certain circumstances. So, i'm kinda looking at this this way: It's possible that someone has low calcium or magnesium, osteoporosis, some disease, bad luck, that one punch in a million that goes wrong, something. His hand breaks. Broken bones split skin - compound fractures. Now the legend starts... He practiced martial arts "A"... in one strike his hand shattered. Shattering even the skin around the bones. The punch was a result of his martial arts training. Therefore, it was the martial arts that caused it.

Things like that are cool. As we go forward, our knowledge of so many different things increase and we begin to see the infinite possibilities that back then could only result in a single conclusion.

WTF are you talking about? It isn't some exaggerated myth that people's hands break when they punch people. Go to an ER and wait around for a few days. You'll see a "myth" walk right on in...

Broken bones generally do not split the skin. Do a google image search for Boxer's Fracture and take in just how many pictures of this specific break that there are.

    Yep.

The longest bones are the ones with the highest rate of compound break (femur, ulna, radius).

The bones of the hand, fingers, and toes are some of the smallest in the body, thus rarely break the skin.
