Gym excecisies to get back into shape for BJJ
Due to life and such I haven't done any real long committed training in almost 2 years.
Things are now settling down and I want to go back to BJJ
At 39 I want to spend a few months in the Gym, lose some weight, improve my cardio (my god I can't imagine doing BJJ with good cardio) and strengthen my back.
Any thoughts or recommendations on good exercises for this?
Try this one. It's really helped me.
The best exercise for BJJ is BJJ. Get back on the mat.
I second PSB. You'll get in shape faster for BJJ by getting on the mats than by doing anything in the gym.
You cant "get for for training", you train in what you want to do and get fit while doing it, trying to hit the ground running will only keep you in limbo.
I used to agree, but nah man. Sprints, circuit lifting, and long distance running have really done wonders for my cardio. I came back off a two month hiatus stronger and better conditioned than ever due to training right.

I have done this several times and when I go back I get injured. As I near 40 my body seems to be transmuting into paper mache.
I am hoping if I lift some weights lose 20 pounds and do cardio first I'll break the cycle.
I would rather do BJJ than go to a gym.
If I was smart I would go back take it easy just drill not roll and work on getting in shape.
But I am not smart, I will jump right back in.
Although I am very cheap I would rather spend money on a new gi and a BJJ membership than a gym membership.
On a similar note, I'm a newb just getting into BJJ, and the group only gets together to roll twice a week.
What exercises could I do throughout the week to improve general fitness for BJJ?
Right now, I do about 30 minutes of swimming every second day, + at least 50 pushups and situps every day. Also am doing leg stretches from TKD.
I do many reps of these types of movements when i can't make it to class.
