Takeda Sokaku claims to be the 'reviver' of the art, which according to them can be traced back to the 11th century. But as DCS said, they have never offered any verifiable proof. And it's not like a martial artist has ever exagerrated/faked a lineage to gain popularity/validity.....

Indeed it is. The first I had ever heard of it was in Draeger's book. Not speaking Japanese, and being active on the old Judo-L text group, I asked Steve Cunningham about it. He stated it was basically something akin to "inside castle art/etiquette" or something similar.

That all arose from claims that Saigo Shiro was some sort of master of ju jutsu at age 15 and was recruited by Kano and used as a ringer in the perhaps mythological police jujutsu vs judo matches.

Ben, Draeger's books are very good but a bit dated.

If you're interested in a more updated version about history and developement of DRAJJ, I'm sure you would enjoy Ellis Amdur's "Hidden in Plain Sight" and also Prof. Goldsbury review (part 1 - part 2 - part 3).

LOL, I know, but I got them when they were not dated and just pulled them out of storage, so I went with what I had.

    Thanks for the reference!
