Not so much, more in the way you receive an attack. Take a haymaker for example, a hard technique would be meeting the punch with a block (force on force) before responding. Wheras, a soft technique absorbs and goes with the punch - one we do (we call it a first hand throw) is kind of like a Sasae-Tsurikomi Ashi (I think) but both hands grab the incoming punch arm and pull it through.

The Daito Ryu I've seen makes liberal use of atemi. Reminds me of the phrase "enter and destroy".

I often see it written about koryu ryuha, as they were created for use against an armoured opponent, that they didn't use striking but that just doesn't measure up to what I've seen or read. Even against an armoured opponent atemi is very good at breaking down someone's posture or attack.

Daito Ryu isn't koryu, though, is it?

I think its "koruyness" has not been proven.

BTW, Ueshiba didn't had a Tenjin Shin'yo Ryu menkyo kaiden

You know, I admit...the very first time I watched this, I was impressed. I was like, "Wow...aikido is really teh aw3some!" Then, after I got schooled a bit here at Bullshido, I started watching it more often and I began to realize that it was just a bunch of guys running, at not full speed, up to another guy, with their arms and hands stretched out and not resisting...at all.

In a way, it sort of sucks when your illusions get dispelled, but, in the end, one can only be better for it.

thanks, I went home and couldn't find my copy of Draeger's "Modern Budo and Bujutsu" to check the reference.

I thought that Takeda Sokaku was the originator of Daito Ryu. In which case no way is it koryu. Unless that "oshikiuchi" stuff was Daito Ryu.
