    This one is more a drilling demo (and again not necessarily the best). But notice the mix of judo-esque throws, aikido wristy-grabby throws and a smidge of padwork (punch/kick). And some other Larping fun like standing joint locks etc. which will no doubt be derided by some of the folks on here.

    But essentially, Aikido is based on some of the "soft" techniques from jujitsu (which are usually taught once your'e higher up the food chain and have a good grounding in the "hard" techniques). So whilst it is drawn from the same pool, Aikido =/= Jujitsu.
    Didn't the founder study a couple of different ryuha of koryu jujutsu, though? I was reading Draeger the other night and I am thinking he wrote Ueshiba was menkyu kaiden in Tenjin Shin'yo Ryu? Besides Takeda's Daito Ryu?

    Don't hold me to that, I'll have to check when I get home from work.

    What they are doing requires skill and athleticism, but I'd be really impressed if they put on some gloves at least and really tried to hit each other. And choke each other, and really grab each other.

    I remember reading he'd studied many martial arts (including several jujitsu ryuha and even judo) but can't recall what level he attained in them (or how reliable those sources were).

    Daito Ryu is often touted as the aiki-jujitsu but aiki techniques have been part of jujitsu syllabi for along time, certainly at least as far back as Yoshin-Ryu from which Tenjin Shin'yo Ryu evolved. It's just that Daito-Ryu specialised in these rather than balancing them out with the harder style techniques.

    I've seen Daito Ryu, it looked pretty damned hard style to me. You mean hard style like punching and kicking?

    Agreed, though unfortunately it's common in jujitsu (at least around here) to equate this level of compliance with "full force" drilling (some would even tout it as sparring, but the less said about them the better).

    I remember learning the hard way from one of our senior kyu's ahead of my first grading when we were drilling a standing front strangle escape (somebody else was being tori for me at the time - it was more aimed at them than me). He said "no no no, you've got to put it on properly" and then did so, I tried the same superfast flashy way of doing the escape I had just been doing but it was useless on a grip with real intent (thankfully he let me go before I passed out - just). I always remember that 'aha' moment before I tori for someone.

    ::Notices the intro::

    I love how the UFC and MMA in general has become a bogeyman for every LARPtastic art out there.
